We talk to Padraig Harrington, European captain, and some other experts to help us predict the European team to win the 2021 Ryder Cup in Whistling Straits.
Today's coverage of the Golfer's Ryder Cup is brought to you by Ping.Even though Ryder Cup points are doubled between now and the conclusion of the BMW PGA Championship (September 12, 2012), Padraig Harrington, captain, has already admitted that up to eight players are being "stitched onto" in order to make his European team ready for the 2021 Ryder Cup.
Jon Rahm
Rory McIlroy
Tyrrell Hatton
Tommy Fleetwood
Viktor Hovland
- Matt Fitzpatrick
- Paul Casey
Lee Westwood
Victor Perez and Shane Lowry are fighting for the other spot. Harrington stated that he would rather have experienced players as his wildcard selections if the former wins. Multiple sources claim that Ryder Cup veterans Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter have been locked up for some time now. It's difficult to imagine Lowry, who is a close friend, being overlooked after his quick return to form.
McIlroy stated that even Shane did not play his way to the points, he would still be part of the team going on Whistling Straits. "Fiery, competitive and doesn't like losing... all you can want in a Ryder Cup player, especially in America."
If Lowry holds onto the last automatic slot, it will allow for another wildcard that is much more difficult to predict.
Harrington states that there are six to seven experienced candidates and three to three rookies competing for the picks. It's more difficult for rookies. To get a pick, they must do something extraordinary. It all depends on how they play their way to that ninth spot.
According to Harrington, Robert MacIntyre and Guido Migliozzi, Bernd Wiesberger must win to have any chance. Although Francesco Molinari and Justin Rose may be helping their cause, it may not matter if Harrington decides that the pressure of being a wildcard makes it too difficult for him to win.
Harrington adds, "There will be a lot more second-guessing myself over these next few weeks." "I'm glad that I didn't get six picks like the US. It reduces the number of players who believe they have a chance with at least three picks.
We expect the European Ryder Cup team in 2021 to look like this, given that it will be an away match that is even more difficult for rookies.
